I doubt very much this is a Spyware issue.

I have had a lot of experience with computers and the majority of the time, freeze-ups are caused by the processor overheating.

When was the last time you cleaned your computer out? Have you ever taken the side of the case off and blown the fans out with compressed air or reversable Shop Vac? The fans can become clogged with "dust-bunnies" and air flow performance will degrade resulting in a lack of air to keep the internal components cool.

Hold the fan blades while you blow them out, you do not want them spinning at a higher velocity than they are made for. Blowing them out with compressed air or Shop Vac can cause them to spin too fast. Holding one of the fan blades while you blow them out prevents this.

You can monitor your Processor temperature in the BIOS. When you start your PC, hit DELETE or F1, depending on your BIOS type. This will bring up a blue screen with information. Usually there is a item listed called PC Health Status. Under that menu you will find info on the Processor/CPU temperature. Anything above 45-50celcius could be a problem.

Establish whether the problem is software or hardware related

If a Windows XP computer keep tapping the F8 straight after you hear the beep after all the self tests have completed.
Choose option boot with command prompt.
Leave for a few hours to see if freezes up. If it does then most likely you'll have a hardware fault.

this is likely to either be temperature problem or a hardware issue.

Temps can be mointored using motherboard monitor software which is free. Often the air vents can become clogged on the computer side/back panels, over the cpu or in the power supply vents. Use a dust buster to clear these or a hoover (not recommended).

As for hardware, well that's a complex issue and involves checking their drivers, removing all hardware and adding back in one at a time.

Install the latest version of each of these and run them
Adaware
Spybot search and destroy
c(rap) cleaner

you may still need one more but these should do it (can't remember the name of the other one) If not it's probably a hardware problem so you will need someone who knows what they are doing to look at it!
