Log on is basic, Login is specific. You log on to your computer, so (hopefully) it's on, it works, and you can do stuff. You login to Yahoo!, in order to specifically check your mail, IM, go to Y!A, etc.... Log on is basically hardware, login is software.

Is this a riddle: there is an 'i' in login and an 'o' in logon. Or am I missing the point.

Logon - The process of gaining access, or signing in, to a computer system. The process (the noun) is a "logon" or "login," while the act of doing it (the verb) is to "log on" or "log in." If access is restricted, the logon requires users to identify themselves by entering an ID number and/or password. Service bureaus often base their charges on the time between logon and logoff.
Login. The process of identifying oneself to a computer, usually by entering one's username and password.
