Why would people's pets have this job? I wouldn't want my dog going into the road to remove a squashed hedgehog or anything. It's too dangerous. I think it's the job of the local council.

I don't think yr question is sick, you may have a specific instance in mind and need the information to do something about it.
I call the roads maintenance dept. in my area, which is run by the County. On the other hand if it's on the freeway, it's probably best to call the non-emergency number of the police department and ask them who to call, as on the freeway that can cause an accident, so the police dept. will know who can take care of it. If it's really urgent and you're not near your own home, I think it's ok to put the animal in a plastic bag or 2 and put it in the nearest garbage receptacle you see, as I did the other day just after a small pet was killed. I don't like children to be walking to school and see it. I know that the local Pound or the SPCA won't come out if they are told the animal is dead already.

hi, i think some of the people on here have misunderstood your question.they think you are asking if a pet animal is responsible for fetching dead animals off the road. i think if it was on the residential street and you rang the council then they might come out but im not sure, i picked 1 up once before as the kids were due to go to school and i didnt need them to see it, it was horrid but more important to me that they didnt witness it.

That's the sickest question I've seen.

I know that if you find a dead animal by the road that you yourself didn't run over (a deer or partridge etc) you can take it home and eat it. The idea of that is that you don't go hitting animals deliberately to get food on the table.

I don't know who does pets, but there is someone near us who goes and collects dead animals like badgers and pheasants rabbits etc off the road and then takes them to be stuffed. I heard he's got a house absolutely full of them! Weird or wot?!

The owner may come to collect if it was a family pet but I think some are just left to rot depending where they are.

What kinda thing is that to think about anyway?

In most states this is the resposibility of the Department of Highways, or Department of Transportation.

Animal rescue charities will check for a microchip and contact the owner if one is found.
