I live in Colorado. A few years back my child was molested and the preditor was suposed to register as a sex offender. The local police said they didn't have him as being registered when they ran him state and national. I did the county, state, and national on computer and could not locate him either. I called the DA's office in town and they told me to call a victims place but didn't have a phone number to give me. The police DID say this man WAS to be a registered sex offender permanently! I had told them that I had seen the man walking thru a local store, and I couldn't imagine if that had been my son running into him! But they couldn't locate him then.
DOES ANYONE KNOW WHO I SHOULD CONTACT TO GET SOME ANSWERS AS TO WHY THIS MAN IS NOT REGISTERED? And how to make them look for him before he finds some other child to hurt. I can't believe he's just out there, and no one is doing anything to even FIND him! He is in his early twenties. The dad and his boy friend, live in same town!

Well, you don't need to contact a lawyer and pay out of your pocket, first off. Second, John Walsh gets 1000 letters a month so that's a no. :)

The best bet is to contact the prosecutor's office who convicted him on your son's assault, and start with them. Tell them he is not registered anywhere you can find, and that you have checked with the local police as well. It is a court order that he register, so why would someone tell you to call a victim hot line, dumb answer, keep pushing until you get an intelligent answer.

If he hasn't registered, he is in violation of his court ordered sentence and can go to jail.

Sorry, but you need to get nasty and aggressive with the court system where he was convicted to get this done. Sometimes they sit on their collective asses until someone makes them get up.

All comments to contact the criminal court, an attorney, and America's Most Wanted are good.

I have found, however, that the fastest way to get the attention of people is to have the local media where you live do a story on how this "sex offender" slipped through the cracks. Call your local news people, tell them your story, and see how quickly the media can "embarrass" local DAs, courts, and others to do their jobs. This is especially true for elected DAs.

okay, the sexual registration registration is a funtion of the court, and of the sentence imposed upon a convicted person. the registration is to be effective after a certain date, each state has varying laws, in colorado, those required to register are: adult and juvenil sex offenders convicted on or after July 1, 1991 for sex offenses against children and under the law the duration of registration varies depending on the classification of the violation of the law.

see the site below for more information.

okay you said that you contacted the DA and they told you to call the victims place? what place is that? and the police that informed you that this person was to be permanetly registered is apperently misinformed and passed it on to you ... sorry .. again see the site below. you might also want to be informed, that you don't want to take any action yourself, do it legally and properly, most states have laws that are to prevent harrassment, see the site that hosts the list of registrants.

I do not know the specifics of Colorado law, but my understanding is that it is generally not the police that dictate who is to be a registered sex offender, but rather the criminal court (i.e. a judge) that convicted the offender. That should have been part of the sentencing order in his criminal proceeding. I'm assuming he was criminally convicted, otherwise he would NOT be required to register as a sex offender. As I'm sure you understand, there's due process for the offender. Now, that being said, if he was convicted of a sexual offense, he should be on probation or parole, so I would suggest you contact the department of probation and parole in your state about his status as a registered sex offender. Of course you could always contact the judge in the case, about this case. Also you could request copies of the court proceedings from the court clerk's office to determine if in fact registering as a sex offender was part of his sentence. The D.A.'s office should have been able to tell you all of this. Good luck.

My thoughts & good energy go out to you & your family.
Have you contacted the National Registry for sex offenders? I would call your state's Sex offender registry as well.
Good Luck!

Honestly speaking please contact some lawyer and get professional advise. You will have to pay some fees but in case if you need help the lawyer will back you up when no one will be their. As you are saying Police/Da etc could not get him then please ask a lawyer for help. Surely lawyer will get information about the person.
