I want to update my bathtub faucet and hot/cold knobs to something prettier. They work fine, they are just not attractive.

Is this an easy thing for a plumber to do? Or will the plumber have to bash a hole in my wall to get to the pipes? Is this something we could do ourselves?

It probably isn't' as easy as some are saying. Many faucet sets are made up of a valve tree inside the wall. If that is what you have, you will either need to go into the wall, or make an attempt under the tub if you have a basement or crawlspace.

Now there is a slight chance they are separate valves but that is not so common, unless they are valves built into the tub instead of the wall.

As another option, it is possible just to replace the covers. They are sold in sets called either "trim kits" or "re-trim kits".

Good Luck!

The bathtub faucets and knobs come with easy to install instructions so you should be able to do it yourselves. Just make sure you have the right type of tools for the project. The installation instructions will tell you what tools you'll need. There is no need to for you or the plumber to bash holes into the wall unless you're replacing the actual water pipes inside the walls. This is an easy project for the plumber to do but be prepared to pay through the nose for their services since they normally charge an hourly rate. Where I live they charge $70.00 an hour with a two hour minimum for their service.

Sorry, no way to answer your question.

MY QUESTIONS:
1. what kind of tub? (free standing/shower enclosure/enclosed tub)
2. is the faucet physically mounted in the tub or in the wall of a shower enclosure?
3. is there a shower which is controlled by the faucet or just a faucet for a tub?
4. TADA, and finally, the big question! is there access to the back of the fixture?

unfortunately, many older houses did not afford access to the back of the faucet, and is the faucet controls a shower then you will need enough access to get to the pipe that goes from the fixture to the shower spout.

This is the key to how much it will cost.

1. can you see the back of the fixture, or can you see a panel that looks like it would allow access to the back of the fixture.
if the answer is yes then it shouldn't be to bad.
2. if the answer to # 1 is no then it could get pretty expensive.
I have a rent house that I've rebuilt the shower fixture twice. If I ever have to replace it then I will need to tear out a wall to get access. good luck

They all unscrew or have screws holding them on. Easy to change.
