Slugs are mollusks so an entomologist, unless he/she knows about other things than insects, would be of little help. Has it been dry in your area? Slugs like to get in the lawn during the day and get below the thatch layer in order to stay cool and moist. If their skin drys out they suffocate because they breath through their skin. That's why they are more active at night--dew (moisture) and no sun to fry them. If it has been dry or hot you can water the lawn to help keep them moist. This would be the most likely cause.

There are, however, in some lawn fertilizers chemicals added that could also affect the slug population. If you really are a slug lover try fertilizing with plain generic fertilizer like 12-12-12.

I would say that your garden was very very wet at one stage and dried out very quickly and the slugs dried out with it.

salts, detergents, insectisides, ashes, and a lot more chemicals kill them...they eat plants...slime the walls and everything they crawl(is 'crawl' the term?) onto...i kill them when i see them...they are pests...why worry?
