I have a new Gateway GT 4010 and ethernet card originally came on the motherboard went bad. Gateway sent me new one, but this one goes in where the expansion slots are used. If I put this in will it be a slower connection than if I made them put a new one on the motherboard? I know gateway would rather not have to put a new one on motherboard because it would mean that I would have to send the computor in to the factory to have them install it. I just did not want to do anything to make the internet slower and I am afraid that even though it might work by installing a ethernet card in the expansion slots it can not be as quick or effective.

If this is under warranty, have them fix it right. The motherboard will need to be replaced and they are trying to weasel out of replacing it. The add in card will work fine, but they are forcing you to use up a slot.

I have replaced about 15 cards as you described. No one has ever complained that their connections to the Internet are any better or worse.

Personally, I like the cards that go into the expansion slots. I think they are much more reliable.

Broadband speeds are typically 512Kbps up to 8Mbps. Even an older 10 meg lan card will accommodate todays speeds. A 100Mbps or even a 1Gbps card would easily accommodate it. It practice a separate lan card will offer you no noticable difference in the quality of service to the one built into the motherboard.

no. the connection is rated as 10base, 100base or gigabit, depending on the actual card, (same as your onboard).

if you are using it for internet connection only, that only goes at 5bit max (in most areas), so don't worry.

Most cards that you get today are 10/100 which means they will do the fastest connection they can find...

...so stress not and stick in your card & surf away.
