Sorry but it's gotten a lot tougher for an employer to hire a temporary foreign worker. You can get a permit but it has to be sponsored by a specific employer who is seeking your specific skills and has petitioned the government to allow them to hire a foreign worker. The temporary jobs are usually only open to citizens of Mexico or Canada (under NAFTA) or students who are traveling abroad.

You say that you want to travel the US for a year so I'm wondering if that means you'll want to work temporarily a few different cities. Depending on your skills and if you know other languages, you might try Kelly Services or Manpower for temp work. Contact one of their offices and ask what the rules are for someone in your situation and they might be able to sponsor you. That's only if you have specific skills though that a US worker in the temp field isn't easily able to fill.

There are no longer temporary work permits for visitors to the US - sorry.
