Three yards equal 9 sf, so in order to landscape a yard, you'd need 9 sf of bark, because you put the bark 4" thick.

You are using the term yard to mean 2 different things. For mulch a yard means a unit of measurement called a cubic yard. A yard around a house is, well, it's a yard.
