Because during the night your mouth stays closed and all the food you ate during the day is processed.
In the morning without doubt your breath should be terrible. That is why you need to brush your tongue mostly to freshen up the breath. 3 teeth brushing sections are recommended, but its also wise to do this after eating sweet and all those food source of tooth decaying.

Because the mouth stinks.
It's ok to brush your teeth after the breakfast too.

you can brush your teeth after breakfast too. And people brush their teeth after getting up because it smells bad after the long night :)

Cuz ya got that yucky morning breath! All those yucky germs cooking in yer' mouth all night! Yuck, I can always tell when someone didn't brush their teeth in the morning.. not only cuz of the sewer like smell coming from their mouth, but plaque gunk on their teeth, Especially if ya drink coffee the coffee sorta clings to the plaque gunk & stands out like a sore thumb!
I would rather smell someones pop tart that they just ate ANYDAY.. instead of morning breath!

My husband brushes when he gets up, I've never understood that. I brush after breakfast since coffee leaves an icky taste in my mouth.

I usually eat breakfast right away, so it's not a problem. But if I don't I'd rather have slightly dirty teeth than have them feel furry.

i know this sounds gross, but i don't brush my teeth until AFTER i drink all the coffee i'm gonna drink in the morning. i don't brush my teeth until i'm ready to leave the house to go to work in the morning. i just don't see the point because i know i'm gonna have at least 2 cups of coffee and if i drink them AFTER i brush my teeth, first off, it tastes nasty, and secondly, it just defeats the purpose of brushing teeth to begin with.

Because of "Morning Breath"
I personally brush my teeth when I wake up AND after I have breakfast.
It makes sense doesn't it?
