India, as you rightly have pointed out, has 3 names. However, as recognised by the Indian Constitution, India has two names - BHARAT and INDIA.

But, strangely (believe it or not), the name India has been derived from HINDUSTAN, which in turn, was derived from the river system "SINDHU".

History says that the name India is derived from the river Indus, which was earlier known as SINDHU.

It was when the great explorers from the land of Persia (presently Iran) came to our country, they dropped the letter "S" from SINDHU and what was left, phonetically sounded like "HINDU" (the Iranian 'h' is cognate with Sanskrit 's)'. Thus Sindhu became Hindu.

When Alexander invaded our country, the Greeks deleted the 'H', in "HINDU" and what was left over, was spelt as Ίνδός in Greek, and pronounced as "Indos". Then stepped in Latin !!! The Latin form of Indos is Indus. Its name was given to the entire subcontinent by the Romans, who adapted it to the current India.

India (alike many other Asian countries), is a name which has its origin in Europe.
