My friend is a distinguished looking 56 year old man who was just recently laid off from his white collar job due to company downsizing. Approaching the job market, should he remove the mustache which he has sported for many years. While the mustache does lend a sophisticated look, it also adds years to his appearance. Should he lose the mustache?

it depends of the job that he's looking for . if he wants a good job , the employers' decision will not be influenced by a couple of years more or less , so the mustache should stay , also considering the fact that it gives the face a more serious look .

Definitely lose the mustache unless he's going into car sales or some similar job that has low public opinion.

Regardless what they believe themselves, or their wives tell them, nearly all men with mustaches look like a lurking child molester unless they are sitting on a horse and wearing a cowboy hat.

Putting all of that aside -- look at the competition and potential bosses: Are they wearing facial hair? If not, there's a reason.

In a similar position - after many interviews it was not until I shaved that I was offered a job.
it grows back again.

how many politicians/salesmen have facial hair? bareface lie comes to mind, but it's what society wants.

I think he should keep his moustache, my dad has a moustache and still looks casual and cool, if he got rid of it he would look weird.
