John Simpson, 1982) state that the words were first recorded in Washington Post, June 13, 1978, said by sports commentator Dan Cook. Bartlett’s notes another version in Southern Words and Sayings (eds. Fabia Rue Smith and Charles Rayford Smith, 1976): “Church ain’t out till the fat lady sings.”

Traditionally she delivers the aria...the song that almost always appear in an opera. So...there cannot be an end coming up unless the lady performing the aria sings.

I think baseball games used to have the National anthem sung at the end, often by a soprano, a lot of whom used to be on the stocky side. So the game wasn't over till then means there's always hope

Because the last song/oratorio in an opera is usually sung by a female, and female opera singers tend to be on the large size.
