Prayer is the action that involved one or many persons to asked something or to have a conversation with hi/her/their God (s). Is used for almost all the religions around the world: Christians, Muslims, Buddhists, etc. Even people who believe in dark religions as Satanists, Sorcery, Black Magic, etc use prayers to communicate their selves with what ever they believe. Some religions as God witnesses don't believe in prayer, that was told to me by a friend who was part of this religion.

A prayer? To me it's asking or requesting from the god you believe in for something that you would like for someone that requires help.
For many years I have asked for different things for others as well as myself. This includes guidance as well as tolerance, because at times, I lack both these vital attributes. However, on a daily basis, I do try to be a perfect human.

Prayer is expressing faith in a higher power. You're talking to someone. You may not even know who. People need to believe in something. It helps us make sense of it all to believe that a creator exists. Most of us need to have the divine and the sacred in our lives. And we need to have personal communion with that divine source that most people refer to as God. Prayer is that personal communion with God. It helps to keep us sane when we can't understand the things that are going on around us. It gives us peace and helps us accept and cope with our lives in the world. Everyone needs help now and then and even if you have no one else to turn to it is comforting to know that you can always turn to God and ask for divine intervention and guidance even when we might suspect that we are only talking to ourselves.

Prayer is when you take the time to consult and talk to your god(s), where it's to thank, get advise or just simply talk.

a prayer is a discussion with your deity...
...or in most cases, a grovelling / snivvely wish made by those who feel helpless to change the world around them.
