i will never forget the image of steve irwin talking to the camera while sharks were in a feeding frenzy all around him while he stood in the water...the guy was a crazy kook but he was fascinating, funny and very entertaining...i kind of felt one day his luck would run out the way he took risks dealing with wildlife but i would never have guessed it would take a stingray to be the culprit....my condolences to his friends and family....he was one of a kind and his legacy will continue as his shows run on animal planet

We need to separate the tragedy to the family from the fact that Irwin purposefully put himself in danger on a daily basis. A fireman walks into a burning building, he knows that he is at extreme risk for getting killed. Irwin, like the fireman, made choices and set priorities about their careers, in full knowledge of the accompanying risk...and that it could permanently take him away from his wife and not allow him to see his kids grow.

So, sad as it may be, no one should be surprised by Irwin's death...maybe the particular way he died, but not that he died from a wild animal (fish).

He was harrassing wildlife and wildlife bit back. Stingrays are NOT aggressive attackers. They use their barb as a self defense mechanism. Steve was most likely trying to wrestle or kiss the darn thing and it "stung" him. Only one other person has been killed by a stingray and that was in 1945.

I feel bad for his wife and kids, but really Steve Irwin was a friggin idiot. I DID win the death pool. I KNEW he was not long for this world. CRIKEY

I think that's the best way someone of his repute can die. I mean, he was killed by the tail of a bull stingray that pierced his heart in the great barrier reef. If you interpreted the whole thing symbolically, it was like an arrow through his heart.

He didn't deserve to die like that. He has been through more dangerous sittuations, and now a stingray separated him from a wife and 2 childer. The way he died was unfair.

I believe it's very sad and tragic that he died. i believe the way in which he died was very ironic. he spent alot of his life exploring and interacting with very dangerous animals and was killed by a very docile creature you could go to any public aquarium and pet. I don't know how many times since i was a child i've seen divers interacting with rays and never seen one use it's barb in defense toward the diver. He will be greatly missed!
