Society IS a God to us. We follow it's norms, we follow it's values, and we persecute those that don't, through both social exclusion and the state punishment systems. There never was a greater God, really - it controls us, it shapes who we are from the day we are born. The type of person we are depends on the society we grow up in.

I don't have any balls, but I will answer your question. LOL

I think that society does try to CONTROL our thought processes and decision making process. Many of us try so very desperately to make sure we are accepted by society. We are given everything we need to know from T.V., radio, magazines, not to mention the Internet. From these mediums we're told what to eat, what to wear, how to wear our hair, where the "best" real estate is, what car to drive, what workout plan is "in", etc., etc. The list goes on and on. I mean, I know women who, upon finding out they were pregnant, start applying to "the best" pre-schools! How many teenagers do you know that say they can't wear this or that and can't have 'that' cell phone anymore because it's so "last year"? Think about commercials on television. How many times have we bought an item, used it, and swore by it, simply because we've seen an attractive model endorsing a product? However, I DON'T think society is trying to liken itself to God. God is a constant, unchanging force. Society is constantly changing; similar to computer programs that are constantly being "upgraded". Society is always introducing us to "the next big thing". God doesn't "force" you to do anything. He/She has given us all free will. And, most of all, as anyone who believes in a higher power will tell you, serving God is NOT "the next big thing"; it isn't the popular choice.

Why indeed. Control of the movement of people and resources. Order, as in New World Order. "Brave New World" meets "1984" in a fusion of two. I'm home, home at last to the place I always new would come into being. So then, what would this new God have of us.

Society wishes to be a God to us...

agreed. society [peers/government/media] tends to decide and then tell us in which direction(s) we should be traveling [what we should be striving for/dressing like/looking like/eating like] and looks down on and/or ridicules those who decide not to/or cannot travel within those confines.

therein society begins to assume the role of god

Why does it take "balls" to answer that question?

Whatever we submit ourselves to, we become slaves to it. (To quote the Apostle Paul).

If you give yourself over to the world's way of thinking, acting, perceiving things, then you will become a slave to a way ruled by satan. (Called the little-g god of this world in 1 or 2 Corinthians I believe....thank you Adam) Jesus Himself confirmed this when he called satan the ruler of this world (that was about to be judged and defeated by the way.)

Satan has one agenda - to be worshiped. So if he rules the world's ways (what you refer to as society), then I would say yes, the world's ways would seek to rule over us as god.

One thing to clarify - By "society", I'm not referring to the laws and government authorities which God Himself has put into place....we are to be obedient to those....but I am talking about the corrupt, vile, perverted ways of thinking and behaving that typically surround us in society today.

There's my response, although it didn't take any special gumption to give it.....why are you so challenging about something that is so obvious?

God does not exist. Ergo, if society DID wish to be a God, it would wish not to exist.

society is not trying to be your god...
society is trying to wake up up to get you to see there IS a god....
you need to believe...
god said thou shall have no other gods before me....
if society is trying to be your god...
don't follow, because that would make them a false god (which the bible also warns you about)

I don't have any "balls".
If we get to where no one knows God any more than we are free to do anything. (Hypothetically) There is no higher power to answer to. Society is our equal, never to be confused with something greater than ourselves.
