Is there a difference? My tutor said there was but I can't find anything on the internet. Can you help?

An open cast is when it's a huge open area (with no roof, so you can look in and it lets the sun in), big enough to drive trucks around in. Like if the Grand Canyon was a mine. (Look up Kimberley's big hole for an idea)
Open pit, is when it's actually smaller tunnels, and eventhough trucks or rail carts can sometimes go in there, it's always underground (Look up Johannesburg gold mine shafts, also one of the deepest in the world)

Open pit mine is deep and laterally large. Like Gran canyon. Open cast mine is shallow and advance across the country in long narrow panels.

open pit and open cast mines are basically the same things. they refer to any mining for minerals located near the surface and extracted from an open pit. an example would be a quarry.
