I first tried using the front page mrthod but my ftp server doesn't work with the it.

For message board it depends what you mean exactly.

You have:

*guestbooks
* forums
* blogs
or
*wikis

It all depends what you want to acheive exactly.

With guestbooks, people can leave a message but cannot ask a question or reply to others. There is usually only one page that is dedicated to posted messages

With forums you can ask questions, reply to other and usually send personal messages.

With blogs - you usually write an article and people comment on it. Each article can be commented on and you usually exchange ideas with your readers/posters

With wikis, people have full access to part of your site to edit it or add new pages etc...
