Birthdays are the celebration of the day of ones birth into this world. Simply a way to remember and be thankful for the day of your birth!
As for horoscopes, well, the ones you read in the papers need to be looked at with great skepticism, as they are incredibly generalised to fit thousands of different personalities who share the same sign. Personal horoscopes can shed a little light onto your traits and character, but in the end, they are purely speculative and cannot tell the future, as the future is forever changing and every possible outcome is probable, therefore it can always be changed. For example, just by knowing your future, you change that "known" future, so stopping it from happening. Like if I were to tell you that, in the future, you are destined to become rich beyond your wildest dreams, that could negate your self driven desires to work hard to attain that future, so potentially causing that future to never come about.
Ignore the answerers who ridiculed you for this question. It is a good question and one that all those of us who have a brain and like to challenge it have asked when we were young. Keep it up, it will only make you smarter!
All the best.
:)

Things either ring true with you or don't.
The only way to get decent understanding of your birth chart is to give an astrologer your birth time ( to the minute) and location of birth in adition to your full birth date. Fore example: born at (EST)14.38 or 2.38pm on the 8th of August 1978 in Australia, Melbourne.
There is so much more to astrology than what can be explained in 30 words or less.

birthdays? I believe they originated at the date of your birth. I think that horoscopes are generic enough to be mostly correct but specific enough to make you think they're exactly correct. Like "Today you will have luck in your finances" well okay that could be anything from my stocks going up to finding a quarter in the couch cushion.

Duh! Birthdays came from 'birth'. Dont believe in horoscopes, it is more stupid than your question.
