I was just there a couple of weeks ago. It is very cheap to live or simply travel as a tourist. I used the trains quit often and buses in the cities. Even cabs are cheap. Average cab ride was about $5-6 dollars and the average hotel can run anywhere between $25 a night (hostel-like) or $150-200 for an upscale SHeraton type chain hotel.

Poland in general is very cheap.
I sent my 40th in Warsaw last year along with 12 friends and we had a great time and spent very little money.
Our 5 star hotel (and it really was 5 star) was only £55 per room per night and we all went out for a meal at a top restaurant, ate loads and drank the place dry, the bill at the end of the night was just £20 a head, that included all the food and drink

It's really not that expensive to live in Krakow. I just lived there this past summer and used cabs, trains, trams, stayed in a hotel and it wasn't that expensive at all. i spend a total of $1000
