i will never forget the image of steve irwin talking to the camera while sharks were in a feeding frenzy all around him while he stood in the water...the guy was a crazy kook but he was fascinating, funny and very entertaining...i kind of felt one day his luck would run out the way he took risks dealing with wildlife but i would never have guessed it would take a stingray to be the culprit....my condolences to his friends and family....he was one of a kind and his legacy will continue as his shows run on animal planet

I'm kind of new as far as watching Steve Irwin, when I did start catching his show I thought he pushed the limits on a regular basis, don't get me wrong,it's a shame he met his end.Maybe this will spark a new awareness in these reality shows.

Your point is understandable, but I don't think surprise *was* the overwhelming feeling, even to those who've used the term, themselves.
I think it was shock and sadness (to those who cared about him) at the loss of a great guy. Quite simple, really. It may *look* like surprise, in their (understandably) emotional reactions, and even feel like it.
Think about it: Did we see this kind of reaction in people who didn't care about him? No. That tells me it isn't about surprise, but loss and shock and grief.
Those who cared about him are no less aware than others, underneath the emotion of the day, that he faced frequent dangers.
I've seen other poster's comment about his activities and the risk. Of course it's logical that his life could have been lost--as he knew--although, after all his successful time with dangerous creatures, we became less *focused* on the danger.
And it *can* reasonably be considered a surprise to see a young man with lots of vigor and life and happiness -- who brought joy to many people -- very suddenly being gone from their lives, *regardless* of the reason.
Surprise is a reaction, not a reasoned process.
One can get picky and argue that everyone's death is inevitable, so why are we *ever* surprised. But I think we tend not to think about when it might happen. So when it comes, it's a surprise not that it happened, but that it happened *now.*
Incidentally, I've seen comments ranging from extremely emotional to extremely insensitive. One must consider the personalities, and level of interest in Steve, these individuals have in order to understand their reactions.

At work (I live in Sydney), when the news broke, everyone was behaving like when Diana died. I made the big mistake of saying that I wasn't surprised, and that he'd probably pissed off the Stingray cos that's what he does, and the reaction I got!
It was like I'd just pissed on his grave...
So I share your lack of comprehension. I guess people just lose all common sense when it comes to death. We are all supposed to be shocked and grief-stricken, and that's just that.

the reason is the way he died, most ppl thought he would die by an crocodile or a snake or something just as deadly but not by no stingray, its just shocking, as far as him courting death daily, no, when he was dealing with a crocodile or a snake he was within his element, totally knew what he was doing, in the ocean he wasn't in his element which is why he died an untimely death. what makes it even worse in my opinion and this is something that i just learned was that he died the day after fathers day, it just makes me very sad for his children.
