You are 100% mistaken.

Presidential candidates are chosen by winning primaries. These primaries are held in all 50 states. In addition, independent candidates can register on the Presidential ballot on their own in all 50 states. This contrasts with Miss America where the contestant can only enter in one state, and from her home state. If Miss America were more like the election system, a contestant could enter in all 50 states and in theory (by winning more than one state) reduce the competition on the final night. Many women (that "Shandi" on Playmania and Lingo on the Game Show Network comes to mind) could win in multiple states, so a contestant could arrive at Miss America night being a winner in 10 or twenty states - a huge advantage.

Lastly, Miss America always guarantees an outright winner. All the runner's up are never heard from again. If 50 people ran for President, the winner would most likely get no more than 25% of the vote, and the top ten finishers would be constantly in the news, creating gridlock and complaining about the winner's policies. Nothing would get done, and in 3 years everyone west of the Mississippi would be speaking Mexican.

Why do more people vote for American Idol then President?

Why do politicians sound like Miss America contestants "I for....." (fill in the blank: world peace, health care, the poor, education, etc...) Yet never have any solutions.

Why is it that once each are elected (more to do with congress) you never see or hear about them again until the next "election"?

With the Miss America pageant there is a whole field of candidates, who compete in rounds, until a handful finalists remain, from which Miss America is chosen.
In politics it is slightly different. There are two pageants (Democrats and Republicans) and the rounds are called primaries. With every primary more candidates fall off, until one finalist of every party remains.
Then there is a Super Round and that is the Presidential election.

For simplicity's sake I have left unmentioned independent candidates like Ross Perot and Ralph Nader.

*imagines a presidential swimsuit competition* hehehe

our forefathers set up the presidential elections out of spite to weed out those whom they didn't want in office.

note that the electoral college does not have to vote with the voice of the people.

i'd love to see it majority rule. PERIOD.
