One of Sir Stephen Hawking's theories was that we are still in the big bang right at this very moment in time, and one day this big bang will crumble, and we shall be reduced to nothingness once more. Do you think this is true? Is there anything else on the subject you know about, as I find it quite interesting. Please discuss. :-)

One theory holds that the universe will expand forever. Another theory holds that the universe will eventually run out of energy to expand and will just stop. The third theory holds that the universe will run out of energy and that the combined mass of the universe will generate an immense gravitational field that will cause the universe to collapse back in on itself (like a collapsing star).

I've heard different theories on the issue, one being that the Universe has been expanding since the Big Bang and is starting to slow down and will possibly reverse direction. Yet there are new suggestions that the Universe is actually still picking up speed and is expanding faster and faster.

No matter what is proported on television and in your school, the concept of the "Big Bang" is still a theory. Those who are heavily vested in teaching this form of thought do their best to advance their belief system.

"Black holes" came about because Einstein made a mistake in the assumption that an accelerating mass gains greater mass in form of energy. This is not correct. An accelerating mass transforms its energy at right angle of movement to that of forward motion. As the energy in direction of travel increases, the line density of the mass increases per given length, thus the mass shrinks. The reason for this is that mass is composed of electromagnetic energy, and has the same values as that form of energy. http://360.yahoo.com/noddarc there is a short writing "The Problem and Repair of Relativity" that explains why this is correct. It'll save you problems later on if you take a look at it.

the background radiation created by the big bang which has been detected proves this.

I believe that we are all just a figment of Stephen Hawking's imagination... when he dies, we'll all die with him.
