There's actually trillions of barrels of oil under the earth surface the only problem is we have'nt the technology as yet to get to it.If you look at it a drill can only go down a few kms ,most of the oil is further down.
If and when it does run out we'll probably be using nuclear as the main source hence why the US and other countries are now promoting it as the new source of energy..
Also solar, wind and even wave power might be a source of energy in the future..

My dad works in the petrochemical sector and I'm studying chemical engineering myself. The oils reserves are set to last much much longer than the press might have you believe. Better refining and drilling techniques mean that we can make the reserves go futher and further every day. There is enough oil to last for generations yet. Most of the oil is just too hard to get to. Did you know that there's more oil under canada than in the whole middle east? Just no-one is able to dig it out yet.

Huge leaps are being made towards sustainable energy, they just aren't efficient enough yet. There'll still be oil in the ground by the time they are.

Hopefully by the time that does happen (wouldn't worry, with better techniques at getting the oil out we won't run out for over a century yet), then fuel cell technology will be honed and we'll live in a CO2 free environment. Other than that we'll use Nuclear, and then all the hippies will be up in arms about that too.
Message to earth huggers - Wind and water power ain't realistically gonna work

Oil will not completely run out. Oil is created all the time. The problem is that we are using it faster than it is being created. There are some hard times coming and oil will just be a part of it

The world will implode and we'll all be shot into space in little plastic pods

Unfortunatly that'll be game over for Oil so companies like BP and Shell better get thier fingers out to find an alternative on fuel for Cars

Finally the oil companies that have been buying and surpressing the alternative fuel market for the last two decades will slowly realease these as the oil increases where comsumers drop off due to price.

Don't you doubt it, oil WILL run out.
However, this will be clear and obvious long before it will happen and new, alternative sources of energy will be found or invented.
Man cannot live without energy anymore, so it will be a case of life and death. Under such pressure many discoveries and inventions will be made and undoubtedly some of these will be useful.
The question is: Will this/these new source(s) of energy be as cheap as fossil ones?

After reading all of the answers prior to mine, I agree with all of them....well....except for that bigot guy and the guy who said oil will never run out. I get his theory, but he's an idiot. I agree that oil will never run out, but that's because we won't use all of it. Right now, there is such a push to get car makers to start creating alternatives to cars that use oil. Right now, the threat is the price of oil.....not running out of oil. We will driving cars that run on cooking oil before we run out of crude oil.

we will find something else to use in the place of oil, although we will never run out entirely, when it becomes short in supply it will get so expensive no one will buy it and we will probably go back to coal which wont help the environment at all

Nothing Drastic. Man will utilise atomic energy or sunlight as energy source for running all his equipments. so only the design and fuel will change, nothing more. In any case our Grand children will do it so why worry?
