Neither. He died.
I would seriously question the idea of being a hero..I have read that some claim that he did so much for the wildlife...a very spurious notion given that ti involved a hands-on approach that seriously p*ssed off the creatures he was getting jiggy with...I get the feeling other less blokey naturalists (hmmm thinks David Attenborough) have done much much more to show the wonder beauty and fragility of nature. And hate to say it but if you mess with the beasts with claws and sharp teeth and barbs in their tales you're gonna get hurt...as for a villain nope that isn't right either...just not sure pi**ing off animals ofr entertainment is a very clever thing to do....

He was a hero to me, I was at first in shock when i heard of his passing, i didn't believe that he died. And then when i found out how he died i was very sad for him, i think of his children and poor wife. Mr Irwin did more for animals, especially animals that most people see as bad or scary, a world of good, he did his best to make sure people understood why the environment and the animals that live in it have to be protected. Steve Irwin was another John Muir for sure and he will be missed very bad. May god rest his soul.

this is a bit of a strange question how could he even be considered a vilan he did a lot of conseravtion work and dedicated his life to showing the world both sides of the animal kindom while pointing out the dangers. he never harmed and of the animals he worked with. but i wouldnt call him a hero as such he was a fantastic person who wanted to save endangered species and show the world how great these creatures were and what damage we were doing to their enviroment but i f i had to choose i suppose he has to be a hero

neither
because he was on tele doesnt make him a hero or a villian (o.O)
he was an ordinary person
who loved adventure
and it was his time to go
how is he a hero?!
sure he helped save animals but does tht really make him a hero?
check out this dude who ppl actually considered a hero
http://www.nytimes.com/2006/09/05/nyregion/05slay.html

if i was a 14 foot croc, the last thing i want is my tail being pulled. pissoff any animal and its going to give you a warning even a doscile stingray. he died neither, he should have left the animal alone. the stingray was doing its own thing in its own environment, steve irwin was out of his environment, if he had stopped and thought just for a split second and forgot the bravado he would'nt be leaving behind a widow and 2 kids. very sad but true!

What would he be a villain for?? The bloke was a hero, sometimes irritating but more human for that, he was a decent bloke and died doing what he loved best. Feel sorry for his family but I think they knew his job was a high risk job and they themselves are involved with wildlife. A great loss.

Hero.
Sometimes there comes along a man (or woman) that interests children in their surroundings. Good on him. Sad Way to go.
