It depends on how much driving you want to do. If you want to only drive in short bursts, concentrate on the East coast. There's so much to see all the way from Florida up to New England. Focus on one area that appeals to what your family likes to do and the ages of your kids. Older kids would appreciate New England because of the history and beauty that might be lost on younger kids. Any other area would have interesting sites but you'd have to drive a bit to get to the next interesting thing. Vermont, Connecticut, Massachusettes and New Hampshire are all within a half days drive of each other and have the highest concentration of things to do in a small area.
If you're going anytime after October, go to the South instead since New England weathers are rough. Georgia, South Carolina and Tennessee are beautiful and have a lot of outdoor family activities.

Yellowstone National Park is Americas most famous natural reserve. It is a favorite destination for families. It is home to some of our most beautiful natural wonders in the United States and you won't be alone or on your own. It's very popular and you aren't too far from civilization. Here is a website that will help you with lodging and activities:
http://www.travelyellowstone.com
Here is another website about the park itself:

If I had to pick one place to visit in the United States outside a city, I'd pick Yellowstone.
If you want a city with plenty of activities in the country, pick SanFransisco. Muir Woods is a beautiful Redwood forest about half an hour from San Fransisco. There is also the wine country of Napa Valley not far outside. The temperature in 'SanFran' is a breezy 20 degrees C in the summer. Mark Twain once said that the "coldest winter he experienced was a summer in SanFransisco".
If you want small town, but beautiful countryside, Hawaii is the answer (not the island of Oahu). My wife and I have a time share resort in Kona on the Big Island. We love it! We go there every year. http://www.hawaii.com. It's pretty cheap to get there from the mainland (San Fransisco or LA).
New England would be pretty, but you'd get bored quickly. Boston is fun. I recommend the "Duck" tours. They're land and water tours of Boston on amphibious tour busses

I'm from Canada but have spent a lot of time in the U.S. and can tell you that there are many great places to go and things to do. There are so many you should check out all the recommendations you get here and look for info on national parks if you are interested in countryside. Although the fact that you have kids and are bringing them along I would have to recommend either Disneyland or Disney World for sure.

Never been and would love to. Wyoming is beautiful, I hear. Especially the Grand Tetons.
I would love to see the Cascades - Mt St Helens, Mt Adams and round Seattle. These are just places I've seen pictures of.
Hire an RV and travel a bit.
