I realise that the College's of Medicine around the world attempt to keep a handle on the dispensing of perscription drugs however...

On the whole people are becoming less patient with their bodies, and require instant relief. This is where the Pharmaceutical industry is raking in the cash.

Sales reps from drug companies approach doctors clinics / surgeries and present a sales pitch, leaving samples of the product for the doctors to 'try out' on their patients.

Furthermore, in many places, doctors will receive a sort of 'commission' for every perscription they write.

The removal of a prescription drug from a person's body most often produces withdrawl symptoms. Does this not encourage chemical reliance?

My question remains - are modern doctors socially accepted drug dealers?

They've been socially accepted drug dealers from the time they started peddling drugs for pharmaceutical companies around the world period. all drug dealers get a commission legal or not. I'm a recovering abuser of drugs and MANY doctors r the accepted drug dealer of choice for many addicts who r addicted to prescribed medication. What's worse some of these trusted medical professionals know fully what they r doing wrong and have no scruples except for the love of the next dollar just like the illegal dealer's love for quick dirty cash. It's too bad they rn't monitored better by the medical society to weed out the rotten apples who make it bad for the good ones.

Some Doctors have made them self's that way. The drug reps. are very needed. They come into the pharmacy often and keep us up to date on new drugs and things to keep in mind for counseling the patient so that you know how to benefit the most from you medication. The samples that they leave at your Dr. office help allot of the patients out there that have no insurance. They day will come when you may need some samples and will you turn them down? Take a look at the insurance companies then too. The Dr. writes a prescription that he/she feels will be the best for the patient. Their insurance company may deny that drug because they have contracts with the drug company's to. It is more than just the Doctors and people can say no when the Dr. want to give them a medication they have a voice to.

What a bizarre question!! With "socially acceptable drug dealers", you mean medical professionals qualified to assess need and prescribe medication where required??! In that case what is "prison" for example? "Socially acceptable hostage taking"...

Yes the pharmaceutical industry is a competetive business!! As such it will involve elements of profit making, marketing of products etc. GPs don't have the time to go out there and research what up-to-date medications have come out on the market to prescribe to their patients which may have fewer side effects than the older medication they have prescribed before. They therefore rely on sales reps to keep them up to speed with recent developments. Sales reps are often very educated and knowledgeable about their products. I work in the substance misuse field. For many years all that could be offered to patients to stabilise an opiate dependence was methadone. Until Subutex came out. We were grateful for our reps visit who gave a talk to the team, left leaflets and booklets for patients, and now many people who did not get on too well on methadone have become drug-free due to Subutex. Why is that "socially acceptable drug dealing"?

I think you also overestimate what practices get out of all this. Most we ever get are some free notepads, some biros, maybe some free mugs...!!

If there were cases were doctors were prescribing inferior medication because they get a bonus for themselves that would be different, but I believe that there are sufficuent controls in place to avoid that.

Why do you think Dr's prescribe so much? Because the public demands a pill for everything! If the doctor doesn't give them the scrip they want, they head to another doctor. It's called supply and demand - without the demand, the supply would dry up. So obviously my point is that PATIENTS need to stop seeking the easy (but not necessarily for our body) route and/or (for the alternative minded folks) demand our doctors get informed and help us sort through the myriad of natural rememdies available to us. Reminds me of the old joke how we progressed from early times of here eat this plant through pills, surgery, etc. back to here eat this plant lol.

Absolutely, I only wish more people were aware of the problem. I asked my doc for information on a low dose birth control option and instead he gave me a 3 month supply in samples and another 9 months worth in prescription. never told me one thing about the chemicals and what they might do long term. When I asked about side effects, I was told there were none. For the record, he is no longer my doc.

Although I tend to agree with you on your point about pharmaceutical companies flogging their product, I would not agree about the drug dealer bit. It's a bit overboard.
