The washing machine has had time to cool off by now. The only way you are going to know whether you broke the machine, or not, is to restart it and see if it runs ok.

1. Try using the washing machine again, with few clothes to see if it works. It should be fine, a rug is not so big, many are supposed to go in the washing machine.
2. If the washing machine indeed has a problem, call a technician, don't ask us if it is broken
3. If it is indeed broken, it is not the end of the world and it is not your fault. Machines break sometimes. We shouldn't worry about these things: health and happiness is the important stuff. So tell your husband that.

It happens to me all the time. It happens when the clothes are unbalanced. It will make a loud noise and then the machine will stop. You open the lid and move the stuff around to balance it out and start it again. My machine is getting old so it happens a lot. I think it is time for me to get a new washing machine.

shouldt be broken. the rug probably was heavy on one side of the bowl and much lighter on the other side while spinning. This causes the washing machine to make the thumping noise. Some washing machines will shut of auto because of this.

Take your head out of the sand, and restart the washer==how else are you going to find out. Rugs with foam backing will come off in the wash , and will/can cause the water pump to plug up with foam==same with drapes/curtains that are foam backed. Bear this in mind next time. Your deal sounds like a "off balanced" load==simply remove the rug==hang it up outside and spray it with the garden water hose==then try the washer again. Have a nice day.

it sounds like you just unbalanced the tub. That can happen if there is too much weight on one side. With one heavy object in there, it could easily happen. If that's what it is, it probably hasn't done any permanent harm. Look at the tub. If it looks lopsided, just gently move it back into its proper position. Then try a small, evenly distributed load of laundry on a gentle cycle, and keep your eye on it. It's probably ok.
