It depends on what kind of wall it is. If it's just drywall, head to your local hardware store and buy a drywall patch and some spackle; should cost you more than about $10-15.

I charge anywhere from $25 to $40 per hour, plus materials. The repair of the hole is a process that should take more than just adding a patch.

It really isn't difficult as a DIY, but I suspect you could at least do the finish work yourself. An honest contractor should let you get away for $50 or less.

No real offense meant to any other DIY answerers but DO NOT just use screen and mud. You asked cost, not process. I'd be happy to relate the ways I do such repairs.

It's pretty cheap. Here's how you could do it yourself...

Get some screen (like the screen that would be for a screen door) that is about an inch bigger all the way around than your hole. So, you'd need something 6 x 6. Get a popcicle stick or pencil and tie it through the screen with a string (the important thing is that the popcicle stick/pencil is bigger than the hole). Push this through the hole and then position the popcicle stick so it holds it in place. You'll be pulling on the string.

Get some spackle (yeah, that's what it's called) and with a putty knife, cover the hole (It might take more than one time) starting at the edge of the hole. The spackle will ooze through the screen and when it hardens, it will help it stay in place. Once it's solid, you can level it off with more spackle and cut the string, sand and paint.

Yeah this is something you can do yourself. I've fixed a few holes in our family room. We removed the panelling and have prepped/painted the walls. You would never know now that behind the paint is a million nail holes and a few huge holes.

You should cover the hole with drywall tape, or buy a drywall patch. Cover the area with a thin layer of drywall compound using a putty knife and spaculing tools. Apply the compound a few inches all the way around the patch so when you sand it, it will blend in.

Once the compound dries, sand the area with a sanding sponge. Apply another coat of drywall compound if you need it.

Prime the area, and paint it.

Assuming the whole is on drywall, the best way to fix a 4" hole is to do a blowout patch. If you happen to have a piece of sheet rock, spackle (finish spackle-blue cap not green!), a spackle knife, a sanding sponge, & primer lying around than you could do it yourself.

Cut about a 6" square off the sheetrock then score the shape of your hole into it, and break off the excess while leaving the paper on. Prepare the wall by scraping any bumps or excess paint around the hole and then put spackle on the paper side that will be attached to the wall. Affix the piece to the wall. Put a little spackle on your knife and gently smooth out the patch. Then put more spackle on the knife and put a relatively thick coat over that to "float the edges out." The key to spackle is to smooth it out so as to need as little sanding as possible. If necessary add a second coat after that one has dried. After all coats are dried and sanded, you will need to but primer, a kind of paint, to cover the spackled area. Then you can paint the area whatever color you like.

Or you can hire someone to do it for about $50

get some drywall tape $5, it looks like first aid mesh. Don.t use regular window screen because you'll have to sand it, and it won't look right.

Also some drywall compound $6.

wet the tape with the compound, place it on the wall like paper mache'. Let it dry a bit, then spread some more drywall compound over it to make it smooth.

You'll have to buy a putty knife if you can't find anything else around the house to use.$5

Total. about $12 to $20 with tax

Sand the whole thing smooth after 24 hours and paint.

It depends on type of wall.

Is it an inside or outside wall?

Assuming that it is an inside wall is it a wall made of “Dry Wall” or is it the older style “lath and plaster.”

I suspect that you are referring to an inside wall that is Dry Wall. If so it depends on what type of hole and what you want as a result. For example, do you want a simple fix or one that will not be visible to the eye when completed?

One method of fixing a dry wall hole can be found at:
http://www.woodzone.com/articles/fixing_drywall.htm

another is at:
http://www.factsfacts.com/MyHomeRepair/Hole.htm

and another is at:
http://web1.msue.msu.edu/imp/mod02/01500380.html

These sites should provide an idea of what you are facing. If I were you I would go to a local home supply store (such as Home Depot or Lowe’s) and explain what you are trying to do, they often have classes on home repair and they can explain what are your best options and estimate the cost applicable to your area.

About Rs.50/- or 1 US $

Please buy one packet
of "M Seal" and mix the
contents with little water
to make a thick paste and cover
the hole with it.

Before filling the hole,
please try to clean the
surface with a brush.

The hole has to be dry,
in order to apply the paste.

Within 3/4 hours, it will
get a bit hard. Within next
10 hours, it will be soilid
like rock.
