Well, I thought it was over but I also thought Ortiz was out for the season when I heard of his heart condition. The twins, white sox and tigers all play eachother in september and the red sox have a three game series with the twins. The central is going to beat themselves up so if Boston can pull everything together then they still have a chance to unexpectedly slip into the playoffs. As for the team giving up...
"I don't think that's the way to put it," the skipper responded. "I don't think that's the proper way. Throwing in the towel means you give up. I don't think you get to this level [and] give up. That's not how you compete."
He did mention building for the future later in the interview which may have been taken out of context.

Francona did NOT say it. The guy who wrote the article said it. Reread the article for yourself.
Yes I am a Red Sox fan and yes I think they're done, but I want to make sure it's clear to everyone that Francona didn't say that.

I'm a Yankees fan and I think it's great cuz the Red Sox fans started talking trash way to soon in the year and got themselves a little too confident and now look what happened.

Give me exact quote. I have not heard of this. If they sweep the White Sox, they have a chance at the wild card. Quote and source, please.
Now, I believe the Red Sox are done this year, and I am not a fan. Just prove what you write.

If Francona really said that then he should be fired. As long as a team is still mathematically in the race you never give up. Francona is a loser anyway. He couldn't managed a toy boat in a bath tub. Of course he was in '04. With that lineup I would have won the dam series. Take a look at his term in Philadelphia to see what a real bum this guy is.

Francona never said such a thing, neither has anybody in the upper management...Nothing even remotely put close enough to it has been said. We just got Tek, Trot, Manny, Papi and Gonzalez back and so far we are doing great...heck, yesterday, we were one of the 7 teams that did a shut out game and that hasn't been done since 1972...
Don't give up hope yet...we have done more surprising things in the past....

Whether he really said that or not, it doesnt matter, the Red Sox might as well go home now. Papelbon is out indefenitely, Ortiz has heart problems, Manny has a bad knee and their pitching stinks.

Stick a fork in em.
Even though its not over, with their closer out indefinitely, things look bleak for the Red Sux.

Best decision the Red Sux have made since Grady Little left Pedro in to pitch.
