I was thinking about what the world would be like if there weren't criminals...
You wouldn't need police, locks, security systems, etc, and all the numberless careers that go into crime fighting and prevention. But, what would those people be able to do for work? Would there be sufficient jobs in other careers to compensate?

No. Criminals generally cause more problems to the economy.

Absent such crime, the money would be spent on more productive and prospective issues, rather than corrective and preventive.

It would most certainly drastically change the world economy. However, I think you will always need some types of jobs to maintain order and keep the peace. Those that weren't needed in that capacity could be added to existing careers that would help to expand the overall economy just by increasing the number of workers. One thing is for sure though, that w/ no criminals or "black markets" the world would be a much different place socially and economically. Cost of goods and services would definitely be thrown out of whack, as well as many other things.

Actually in a capitalist system, criminals serve a very important part, crime creates need, need creates a service- this is how capitalism works.
As much as capitalists complain about the cost of crime, it was the legislation that was sought to reduce competition that many of the criminals.
In answer to your question, the majority of police if you took away their badge and gun- they would be unemployable.

you're absolutely correct. we as a society need criminal activity to continue to thrive for many of the same reasons that you listed. not many people are open-minded enough to come to that conclusion. the more wealthy a society becomes, the more criminal activity develops. i think that is because the gap between the haves and havenots has gotten so huge that people at different levels strive to improve their financial situation by any means necessary. unfortunately they turn to means that are illegal to advance themselves. i'm just happy that more white collar criminals are finally starting to get caught and forced to pay for their crimes. i guess i got a little of track there. in any case, i truly appreciate your question.

bush and the neocons on capitol hill seem to think so ... if theres no enemy to fight just manufacture one and sell them to the people is their motto. your wrong about needing all that stuff and careers also... they need that big control grid to keep the population under control and siphon off all the money into their pockets.
