My boyfriend had a very good job, a house, a car. He also had smoking cigarettes since he was 12, marijuana since 13, and when he turned 15 years old he started to use heroin. He always was a very bright guy with a great potential, however he was also a heroin addict, a junky. Gradually, but surely, he started to need more and more money to support his habit. At 28 years of age, he robbed a bank, been on run hidding from FBI for a while, eventually got caught, and sent to a Federal maximum security prison for 12 years. He is still doing time there, 3 years left to go. For 9 long years of his time there, he did not eat a good food, slept on a good bed, took shower for longer than 5 minutes, or made love to a woman. His family turned away from him. His mom visited him only once, his dad and brothers - never. All his friends have forgotten him, no one writes.
Another story. My childhood friend got addicted to heroin, got into debts because of that, could not repay the debts, so he commited the suicide by hanging himself in the bathroom. He was only 23 years old, left behind a wife and two children.
Another story. Another my childhood friend got addicted to heroin, got caught, sent to prison. He got killed in prison by rival inmates. He was 21 years old. Left behind a wife and a daughter.
Another my childhood friend got addicted to heroin; he died at 25 years of age from the heart damage caused by heroin.
My boyfriend's friend had a heart transplant after the damage inflicted by heroin. She is 36 years old now and has been clean for 10 years, but the doctors said she will not live long.

If you abuse them they will destroy lives. I have never touched drugs as I've seen what they do to people. Even cannabis wrecks peoples lives, no matter what others say. Alcohol is just the same. I do drink but not to extremes. I have a couple of vodkas if I go out or I might share a bottle of wine at home. It's a difficult question as I think that there must be other reasons for why an individual becomes hooked on these things.

Yes very much, alcohol and drugs not only destroy your life, but the ppl in your life that love you such as family and close friends. My experience is from my Fathers sucide and a brother who went to the pen for drugs and a niece who is now 37 and looks 67 and has siezures, and blackouts, from years of drug and alcohol use.. Some say a high blood pressure is a slient killer so is drugs and alcohol..If one values their life and love their family there is help out there, you just have to be strong enough and want help...No one is ever turned down when they want help. Those who do not think they have a problems are the ones who are not seeking any tpe of help..Theres 800#s everywhere you look for help in either issue. And Plz do not be ashamed to call and ask for help, for the life you save today might be the one you learn to Love tomorrow..

I don't think either alcohol or drugs destroy lives...It's what people do with alcohol or drugs that destroy them.
Alcohol in moderation is OK. Alcohol drunk to excess so that one becomes totally dependent on them and unable to function is bad. There are people who work responsibly and bring up a family and drink themselves to sleep every night. There are people who drink themselves to sleep and never work or work irregularly. The same can be said for drugs. If the person involved lacks the character to stop or lay off and acts irresponsibly, then it's not the alcohol or drugs--it's the person. Alcohol and some drugs may cause people who are already weak in character and irresponsible to be even more irresponsible...
Maybe the best we can say in reference to your question is that alcohol and drugs help some weak people destroy themselves more quickly than they might otherwise destroy themselves.

Once someone gets caught in the trap of Alcohol or Illegal drug (some legal drugs too) it can be very difficult to get out, it destroys their life, and hurts those around them who have to watch their father mother husband wife son daughter friend, self destruct. And the hardest part is unless they really want to quit there is not much you can do to make them stop.

Many lives are enhanced by alcohol and drugs.
From my experience, alcohol and drugs only destroy lives if the people using them lose control and become wreckless.

There's no question about it that drugs& alcohol
do just that and you don't have to experience
anything like that yourself to believe it and you
should learn from other people's experience.

I do not take drugs and drink very little alcohol. Drugs do ruin lives and everyone around them. I personnally have no sympathy for people who take drugs, and they deserve everything they get. My advice you can take it or leave is: DON'T DO IT in the first place.

not my experience but my observations. YES is the answer and both make the brain short circuit. Hence destroyed lives.
those who do take them are very different to those who don't, even prescribed drugs can be seen at work.
I don't take anything, but people who do make my thoughts spin and my eyes go twirly wirly.
