Jerry Mahoney and Knucklehead Smith are ventriloquist dummies, Paul Winchell was the ventriloquist.

What was interesting is that Paul Winchell was a good ventriloquist, but he apparently worried that he wasn't. Or maybe he wanted to pay homage to performers who came before him. In either case, he patterned the names of his dummies after one of the biggest vaudeville stars. His dummies' names had the same number of syllables, with the same "meter", and accent on the same syllables, as those of Edgar Bergen.

Mortimer Snerd - Knucklehead Smith
Jerry Mahoney - Charlie McCarthy
