Check for density. Use that so-called 'gold' to displace a certain volume of water. Density of gold is 19.0 g/cm3. Take +/- 0.25 for accuracy :)

The link has tips on identifying real gold when panning for gold. Gold jewelry (rings?) are usually alloys of gold and copper, silver or platinum. The mark 14k means there are 14 parts gold out of 24 parts. Pure gold is of course 24k. Pure gold will be very soft and maleable. A pure gold coin can be beat into a foil large enough to cover a horse! (with gold leaf). Also, you may be looking at 14k gold on jewelry but it may be gold plating (gold fill). I would consider taking the jewelry to an experienced jeweler (not the sales clerk) for an opinion before buying possibly fake items.

Very easy!...Density is the amount of matter in a given volume of the material. It si obtained by using the formula...DENSITY equals MASS divided by VOLUME.Different substances have different densities. Imagine that you discovered a block that looks like a gold. You wish to determine whether its really gold.To find out, first measure the volume of the block. You find the volume to be 1000 cubic centimeter. You measure its mass and find that it is 19320 g.You then calculate the density of the block.the answer 19.32 gram fer cubic centimeter. Now that you know the density of the block, how can you tell if it is made of gold...Gold has a density of 19.32 gram fer cubic centimeter. Of course,to be really certain about it,you may have another test. You can use weighing scale for measuring the mass.and graduated cylinder or you can measure the volume of the water in a glass.if you use water disflacement method, after measuring the volume of the water, flace the gold and measure now the volume of the water.Disflacement method is used to measure the volume of insoluble solids.Hofe you get it!!

You need a weigth scale and a measuring cylinder. You put a mesured amount of water in the cylinder. You insert your gold piece and the increase on the level of water tells you the volume of your piece. You measure the mass of the piece and compute it's density (grams / cubic cemtimetres). Gold has a much higher density than other metals (about 19 g / cm^3).

When I steal gold, I run a magnet over it before I take it to the pawn shop. If it is pulled toward the magnet, it is junk.

But that is only the first test.

If its real it would be marked on the chain. It should say either 10k, 14k, or 24k
