It means the webpage is secure! Nothing to worry about...you should look for it on all websites...especially if you have kids...it ensures safety! if you were purchasing a song or something that involes a credit card then it means nobody will get your CC number! I hope i helped! Have fun on Itunes

confusion reigns with the above answers!!
you will probably notice that it only appears when your iPod is connected. all it means is that you have your iPod set to "automatically update songs and playlists". If you click the little iPod icon on the bottom right of the iTunes screen, this will take you to the iPod preferences window. select "manually update songs and playlists" and then you should notice that the little lock is gone...
