A protagonist is only as good as his antagonists allow. This is one of the appealing aspects of villains. There has to be a good balance of the two or there is no story.
A villain is an "evil" character in a story, whether an historical narrative or, especially, a work of fiction. The villains are the bad guys or heavies, the characters who strive against the hero. Female villains are sometimes called villainesses.
It is the unmitigated evil nature which distinguishes the villain from an antagonist, like Javert in Les Miserables — a character who opposes the hero, but by such means or reasons as not to become entirely odious, and who may be even repent, be redeemed, or become a "good guy" in the end. The villain is also distinguished from an anti-hero — a character who violates the law or the prevailing social standards, but who nevertheless has the audience's sympathy, and is therefore the real hero of the story.
In spite of being the target of the audience's hatred, the villain is an almost inevitable plot device and often — perhaps more than the hero — the central theme of the plot.

We all secretly love the villains, what is a hero without them? Life would be so boring if after only one confrontation the Joker had said " Okay pointy ears , you win" instead he has kept on keepng on and he is escalating. Yes The Bat has gotten increasisngly self righteous but look at the competition Superman is almsot perfect,, The Green Lanterns have the most powerful weapons in the known universe, and The Flashes have attained Godlike power. This would probably compound anyones psychosis. However unlike the others his training and obsession make him vulnerable to such feelings because of the levels to wich crime takes him. IN other words give the guy a break.

There is no superhero/villian cooler than Venom or Carnage in my opinion. And the Punisher because he knew how to deal with the bad guys permanently. Every one is on the fence about the Punisher because of his readiness to take a life unlike other superheroes. I mean if Batman were to kill the Joker most of his problems would be solved right there.

The ones with realistic personalities, and human weaknesses, I can sympathize with. Guys like Luthor, who just use people, I can't, no matter what happens to him. (That's why they eliminated the original Lena Thorul, who was his sister, and made her his daughter whom he used as a pawn, so that he would have no redeemable qualities at all.)
What sort of brought it home for me was a Batman story; I can't even recall the title or the name of the villain. There was a guy who had been scarred by some woman, a model. I think maybe they were both models, the guy was considered extraordinarily handsome. They guy blamed the women for having disfigured him; he wore a mask so that nobody could see what his face looked like, now. He murdered them one at a time in brutal ways that horribly ruined their faces, first.
When Batman caught him, they guy was more concerned about not having his mask pulled off than about being caught. But Batman was dedicated to exposing evil to the light of truth as well as stopping crime.
Batman thought he was prepared to see any kind of horrible disfigurement-- after all, he's fought guys like Joker and Two-Face...! But when he pulled the guy's mask off, Batman's face reflected shocked disbelief, horror and disgust.
Then the reader saw that all he had was a tinly little scratch on one cheek, almost unnoticeable. But it was his ego which had magnified it in his mind until his 'perfect beauty' was destroyed, and for THAT he had to have the ultimate cruel revenge on those poor women...!
THAT was truly horrifying and disgusting. It was his moral character, not just what he did but the reasons why he did it, that made him a villain. So it is not the feats of derring-do that we admire, but the noble motives of the heroes; and it is not the deeds of the criminals, but the cruelty and selfish evil we despise.
Captain Boomerang of Flash and Suicide Squad fame was never very successful as a super villain. But it was his petty greed and cruelty, the smallness and selfishness of the man's character, that made him so despicable. I don't think anybody missed him when he died.
I think that one of the greatest things Batman ever did was to laugh at Joker's joke at the end of Killing Joke. By respecting him in that manner, to lend him some dignity and human worth after all he had done, to let him feel that he was after all to a certain extent, a 'successful comedian', would go more toward healing Joker and hopefully rehabilitating him someday than anything else.
What caused Harvey Dent to go back to crime after he was disfigured the second time...? Despair.
Yes, Batman hates crime and those who do it. But he also is dedicated to seeing people restored to their right minds, and become functioning human beings again.
When he was first introduced in 1938, Batman carried a gun and used it to kill some criminals on occasion. I'm glad he doesn't do that any more. I missed that story arc about Gordon in NML, so can't comment about him.
Anyhow, I hope that you won't idolize the bad guys to the extent of imitating them. That would be a mistake.

I would love to be a supervillain myself. They're more accessible to us average people, because they're not self-righteous or anything; they just go out and get what they want in life. And they do it while wearing awesome costumes!
