The state of the NHS service and the fact that people who come in from abroad and have never paid a penny into the NI pot and then despite some of them having insurance which would cover hospital expenses are seldom or never charged, European nationals aside, they should be made to pay or go private. I think on the 09/09 ever year up until 09/09/09 we should all take a sick day so the country comes to a standstill and maybe then the Goverment will actually listen and start charging for the free service it gives to the rest of the world where as if you live here and pay tax and NI here, you can wait till you drop dead or pay to go private cos there are no funds left after treating everyone running here on cheap flights who get emergency treatment for free. Think this would work? Who's with me? How do I get it started? Thoughts and comments please

Sounds like a plan to me! I don't get sick days, but I'll call in anyway! (not done that in a while)

Although it is a good idea - surely the "bosses" of the country are also effected by this too, and what chance have you got of them taking the sick days too? And bearing in mind other strikes and crisis we've had in the past, surely it will put the country into complete disarray which would be negative for us in the long run

I agree - SOMETHING needs to be done. My mother is a nurse on the NHS and she thinks the money pot will be running out sooner rather than later. District nursing branches are closing all over the shot, and I dread to think what else is running out of money

You could start campaigning. What you talk about here is a countrywide strike. Maybe not a sick day, but i'm sure some other actions could be justifiably done without risking peoples jobs.

Problem is, unless the employees have a union, they will be in the firing line to get sacked if they do it.

As to get lots of people to do it, lots of people would have to know about it. Including the employees management.

Something harmful to the government would be better. Like blocking all there building entrances with cars or similar.
It needs to be something that affects only the people you are targeting. Its like those fuel protests, i was fully behind there complaints, but when they drove barricades along motorways at 10 miles an hour, all thats affecting are the poor drivers, not the government. So it had no affect whatsoever, except annoying people like me who drive around the country as part of there job.

Maybe contacting a newspaper, like "the sun" and setting up an website whereby you can sign up and agree to protest to your local government in a particular way. With the newspapers nationwide coverage it would hopefully gain momentum.

I would definatelty be up for that ....

Maybe we can't all throw a sickie and risk losing our jobs but a statement does need to be made and I'm up for some form of action. Easy enough to get the word out about anything these days. Just send an email to everyone in your address book asking them all to do the same.

Maybe you could just get an email petition going, I think it would be the volume of people participating that will make an impact rather than the actual form of action it takes.

Good luck.

I am in the USA and find it interesting that we have politicians here who think your version of health care is great and we need to use that here. From your description it sounds even more messed up than our system. Both of our countries have a terrible illegal immigrant Problem and don't they just seem to need constant unending supplies of money that we are expected to provide with our tax dollars. Your sick day plan most likely wouldn't do any good just get a lot of people fired but you are at least thinking about the problem and maybe you will find a solution that your government could use,

I can see your point but it's never going to happen realistically. Not all people can afford to have one day off sick, it wouldn't be fair on our employers, it would be an inconvenience to everyone when there are no buses running, no petrol stations or shops open, no one to take people to hospital in an emergency, no one to treat them if they managed to get there, people would die because there is nobody working to save them. All our houses would get robbed because if the police force are not working, they would have a free for all. I could go on all day talking about the devastation this idea would cause.
I'm not sure, but would it not be classed as racism too?

I get paid by the hour and am on call after work. My boss would just tell me to keep my phone handy in case of any emergencies and let me go home. It wouldn't affect much at work.

Besides, how many people would find out about your attempt anyway? You'd have to get the word out to enough people for it to have any impact. Even then, it probably wouldn't affect any company much. At most, you might be able to get some press.

If I was your boss and you took a sick day that day I would fire you straight away. What boss would tolerate you taking an illegitimate sick day! Instant dismissal, simple as!
