Look on the back of your new cd rom drive. There is a large socket for the IDE ribbon cable, a smaller 4 pin socket for the POWER cable, there may be 2 or 3 other areas which have connectors. One of these will have a number of pins, and a small (often black) rectangular block over 2 pins...this block is the jumper, and is used to select if the drive is 'Master', 'Slave', or 'Computer Select' Close to this, there will be a small diagram, to show you which pair of pins are which.Remove your old drive, note which way round the cables went, generally, this is 'Red to the Middle' for both the IDE and power plugs. Now, look at your old drive, identify the jumper, see what it is set to.master, slave or computer select. Set the new drive up the same as the old, if old was master, set the new to master. Insert the drive, connect up the plugs ('Red to the middle') and away you go. If, however you really mean you are adding a cd rom, then you may need a new IDE cable with 2 sockets, and a split power cable. so, installing additional.... Check your existing drive, set it to 'Master', set the new one to 'Slave' on the jumpers, pleg them in, and away you go.

A jumper is a connector which connects two pins together. Its usually insulated in plastic. Look at either side of the CD Rom, there are about 6 or 8 pins located very close to one another which is were you will also find the jumper.

The jumper has various settings such as cable select, master and slave. Try cable select as it usually works with most congigurations. There should be a small diagram on the CD ROM showing you which pins need to be connected to set the CD Rom to cable select.

Good luck!

Jumpers are the tiny black things on the back of the item. You get them on hard drives and it tells the pc whether its master, slave etc. You will need tweeers to move it.
