I think it's from when CB radios were used, the name on the dash is probably their nickname from their CB days.

Very few companies will let a driver customize a company truck. However that is one thing that can be done and is removable that the driver can do to give the truck a little personal touch and not get a fine or get fired over.

I owned my own truck and hauled rock bands with it for 17 years. The company guys would have their bug screens painted or made, to kind of do something so the truck did not look like the next one. If a driver with that company even so much as drilled a hole in the dash to mount his / her CB they had 1,000.00 taken out of their final check, and that check came as soon as the hole was found. But a bug screen is not company property and could be removed without any damage to the unit. However, some companies will not even let their drvers do that.

Are you sure its not just the Eddie Stobbart lorries?? They all have random names on the front of their trucks, not just the names of the drivers but actual random (usually female) names - I havent seen it on any other lorries.

They do that so they will can know each other as they pass on the highway. Say one see's a cop, and then he passes a friend he would then radio him and warn him.

Do they? I haven't noticed that before.
Like "Big Ed" or "Roly" or "Fat Boy Slim"? That sort of thing?
Are you sure that it is only the big guys (or gals of course)?
Keep looking and you might see a "Little Richard" or a "Tiny Tim".
