Why do some people choose to go through the same things over and over again, despite learning from past experience that they will only bring heartache, pain, misery, discomfort, etc.

A woman in an abusive relationship chooses to stay with the lowlife despite having heard his promises to change for the 100th time!

After a wild nite out and a hangover the size of Manhattan, we promptly plan for another wild one the following day!

Men cannot multi task, it's proven. Why do they still try, knowing full well it's an effort in futility? :)

Why do some women fall for the same type of guy that broke their hearts in past relationships?

Why don't we LEARN?

I think the reason why some people "don't learn" from their past experience is, somehow, that bad experience brought what you may call a challenge to themselves. Like, they know already what the consequences are but are still willing to go through that same bad experience yet again. Maybe because they've somehow, if not proven once to their own selves, they endured the consequences and are confident their chances of surviving is possible the next time around.

Also, that same bad experience may have brought something good along with or after the bad ones. For example (using one of the examples you provided), the woman who lives in an abusive relationship does not only receive pain in her entire life in the relationship but most probably also affection, which she normally gets or hears from her partner whenever he promises to change. The feeling of being loved may have overwhelmed her so she may have chosen to keep the relationship no matter how often bad things happen between them.

Try applying the above to the other examples you provided.

However, we do learn from bad experience and, as much as possible, we do our best not to experience that same bad experience again or we anticipate its possible occurrence by planning ahead. Example, cutting your finger while chopping tomatoes. I don't think you want that to happen again so you rather take extra care the next time you chop tomatoes.

Some people are so stubborn that they want to do things their way. Some have to be shown another way that is better. They might be stuck and not know how to get out. Humans have a comfort zone that they will stay in because of the fear of the unknown. The unknown might be far better but they don't want to be alone so they stay with an abusive relationship. Abusers tear down the self esteem of their partner. Women getting their hearts broke are listening to words and not the actions of the man. If we look real hard we can see the real person. They can only put up a front for so long. It is to hard to keep it going. It is all in the person and whether they want to change.

falling for the same type of guy, because that is the type they are familiar with.

I'd like to think that we learn eventually, but we don't!

I know that we do have to learn from are experiences. I think when we really learn is when we decide to make a change, we see that the change was good and them we have learned something. So therefore we don't go back to the bad experience. But sometimes when a person is in Denial or is mentally sick,Physically sick, whatever they have low self esteem and they do go back to old behaviors. But you can bet that these people do learn, everyone learns, since we are Humans and not animals. It's just the fact of getting it to stick in the brain. Some people have hard heads , while others have soft heads.

The mechanic of knowledge is evaluating your current experience and comparing or contrasting it against previous experiences in the same realm. In psychology there is no difference between experiencing and learning. What you're talking about here are morons. People who experience things and learn the consquences of previous actions but just don't make good decisions in life.

Some people do learn. Some only learn when something really bad and painful happens. I guess that's what makes the difference between intelligence and stupidity.

Humanity is almost unique in its ability to learn from the experience of others, however, humanity is Also unique for its apparent disinclination to do so... Live with it, or break the habit.

Some people never learn. I work with a woman who has been with us for ten years. She thinks she has ten years' experience, but actually she has one year's experience ten times.
