First up, have you made any changes that would affect the computer configuration before it crashed eg download a new driver, add software, peer-to-peer stuff, opened an email attachment?

It sounds like you are using Window 98 or similar as I can't remember seeing these messages with later versions (might be wrong but the principle is the same).

The reason you are seeing the messages because of a microsoft 'safety' feature. That when window does not shut down properly it automatically goes to this 'diagnostic' mode when you restart.

If you go into SAFE mode this means that only the essential programs/driver etc are loaded...nothing fancy just the absolute essential software to make the computer work. You should always be able to get into safe mode.

The other option mean that you can load up additional bit of software to allow networking to occur etc.

If you can not get into SAFE mode then that means your operating system is corrupted (probably the original reason it crashed on you).

Close down your computer and turn it off a the wall ie no power to it. This is a 'hard boot' and will ensure that you don't have anything in RAM when you reboot. Leave it off for about 30 seconds and then switch on the power and start your computer. You may get back to the screen you saw before (safe mode etc). Try the option to start windows normally, you may find it will run a 'scandisk', let this happen if it does. If you get the error again, repeat the hard boot again and this time see if you can get into SAFE MODE.

Assuming you are in SAFE mode, this means that the basics work but some other program not loaded is causing the crash. If you changed something prior to it crashing, remove it in SAFE mode and then reboot the computer and hopefully, you should be working normally. Otherwise you will have to try and figure out what program is creating the problem (technical support is needed).

Do you have a anti-virus boot disk? It may be a virus problem (particually if you can get into safe mode). If you do then run this and follow its instruction to scan/clean you computer. If you are running window 98 then a generic anti-virus boot disk should work (speak with friends who have an anti-virus program on their computer). If you are using NT based OS (eg window xp) then unless you have one created on that computer you might run into problem getting one.

good luck!

If it wont start in safe mode, then you truly have a problem. And it's a problem that cant be described or fixed here. Get help from someone who knows how to fix PC's.

It's "likely" that the power being turned off has caused a corrupt file on the hard drive.

It's also "possible" that it has actually caused physical damage to a component inside the machine. You need someone who can tell the difference to have a look.

The chances are very good that any damage to the computer was caused BEFORE you unplugged it from the wall. Something happened either hardware or software related which caused the crash.

Many, many times I have lost power to my computers and never has there been any damage other then a loss of data from what I was working on at the time.

You did not cause the damage.

There, now you can sleep well tonight.

To be honest if you can't even boot up in safe mode then you are going to be struggling to solve this one on your own as it could be a multitude of problems. When this happens to me I often find that it can be easier just to reinstall the operating system without overwriting the data. That way I have all up and running again in a hour whereas I could spend hours trying to work out the problem.

However if you haven't got the knowledge on how to do this you would be best to get someone qualified to do this as you could lose all your sisters data and that would be a lot worse.

Next time remember its really dumb to turn it off at the wall. If it crashes and won't shut down normally you hold in the restart/off button until it shuts down. That's called a hard reset. You could try putting in the windows cd and boot into the recovery console or try booting into windows from the disc. This is why idiots shouldn't use computers!!

when the options come up, try selecting 'last known configurations that worked'. All that should happen if it crashes and you have to turn it off at the wall is it should run scandisk (unless thats disabled), I'm always having it done, my kids think its funny. Seriously though, just chose last configurations, always works on my old beast!!

lol u r a noob (no offence)
this is a VERY minor problem and can easily be fixed by just selecting start windows normally.

you can always turn the computer of at the wall, it wont harm your computer at all.

the only thing it can do is lose unsaved files or programs

cheers,
