If you will notice, almost all birds tilt their heads back when they drink. If they have a large piece of food, they will let gravity help move it down to the throat to aid in swallowing. You may have seen a chicken eating a large insect, and needed some help swallowing it.

To watch out for Chicken Hawks?? Seriously...they are also called Harris Hawks, and Red Tailed Hawks.
Chickens also find it easier to swallow when they tilt their heads back, especially for water.

whether an eagle or other enemy bird is coming or not....
or a cat on the roof.....
If it is coming, the chicken can run & hide ....
