as an ex promoter and manager of some name bands and having been in the industry some few years there is no easy answer to this as there are so many things to be done, forget about all those silly posters ideas because nobody will just look at a poster and say lets go see them.
you need to make up a portfollio of the band including brief details of the members along with promo photos then visit venues who put on music (live) maybe try to arrange or take part in band battles this will get them noticed ,it may be worth buying a copy of the STAGE which has ads etc at the back, there are loads of things that can be done if want free advice contact me at paulleigh2002@yahoo.co.uk and we can arrange a talk (for free)

Gigging and building a local following is key. Building a reputation as a good band locally, can only be done by gigging your *** off. Get slots supporting well know local bands, gig every weekend at all the hot-spots for local bands. Get a demo made and hand it out for free at gigs, so that if someone at the gig likes the band, they go home and let all their friends hear, then at your next gig you have more of your own crowd. Also leave copy's of the demo on the counter of local music shops to be handed out for free. And yes....posters and flyers are important, without them, no one will know your gigging.A thing we like to do is make sure there are at least 2 other bands playing (crowd x3) and have an after gig DJ or 2, so that someone seeing the poster sees it as a big night out rather than just a band playing. The Internet is good for wider spread exposure, and a lot of bands use my space.

Posters with website info. Better still get a myspace account for the band. Do a browse search for say 20 to 30 year old within twenty miles of your base postcode, then start forming friendships, email, and promote!

Try free listings in local papers and mags, and /or fanzines.

get some posters done, put them up in pubs and clubs with a contact number.
unfortunately in this business it usually boils down to word of mouth, tell every1 you know about the band and hopefully they will pass it on.
ring a few agencies and see if they are looking for an new bands, they will come out and see you.

The webcast thing works well with the modern age....

Do some nights broadcasting on the web....

Also record some video and put it on youtube.com...

That is GREAT for exposure all over the world....
