I care about people and I like to help when I can. I started doing this because it seemed like a good way to help others. Lately though, I'm seeing posts indicating that some questions are hoaxes, lies, stories from a book, etc. How can I spot a hoax question?

Sometimes, I check out a person's question history. It can help in detecting some fabrications. Recently there was a post from a supposedly 10 year old girl asking a very sexual question. I searched the question history and discovered this person had stated several times before that she was 17 years old. I pointed this out in my answer. The person actually gave me the 10 points. :)

It's very hard to tell. I can get a bit emotional in my questions and it can look vaguely like I may be joking even though I'm actually very serious. I answer a question as if it's serious unless it's completely obvious that it's not.

It isn't easy at all. I sometimes go and look at other questions people have asked to see if there's a pattern but I've been caught that way once or twice, too.

Maybe the best policy is, if in doubt, don't answer!

They are easy to spot... the hoax questions are the ones that roughly follow this format:

Question: "What do you think about this"...

Details: "Anyone who doesn't agree with me is an idiot."

If they are breaking the rules I report them that way see much less crud however they all have there upside in that you can answer away and get more points.

You can already tell. If you feel a question is not sincere don't worry about it, move on. As long you feel you are right, have no worries.

If it doesn't look like a question it probably isn't.

When you see other answers that don't look like answers. Probably the question is not genuine.
Hope this helps.

Does it matter? Does it matter if a question is real or hypothetical? Does that invalidate the question?

Time and experience. Then you will still get fooled, sometimes.
