I've had my daughter watch the likes of ET, Home Alone, The Goonies, Starkid, Flight Of The Navigator, The Neverending Story, Ghostbusters, Honey I shrunk The Kids, Scarface (Nah, I'm kidding with that one). But bar that last one, she loved them all. Only one that comes close to being as good was Shrek and Toy Story. Whats going on with the children's film industry? Should we all petition Hollywood to make more blockbusters like they used to back when we were little?

Reading through the answers, you've brought to mind even more of the great films we had back in the day. Shame they don't make em like they used to. And have to agree Monsters Inc was another good one.

You are so right. I have a 5 yr old who loves gremlins, ghostbusters, wizard of oz, annie etc. Even tho she has all the latest, she watches them once and doesnt bother again but the older ones she watches over and over. I think the newer movies all seem to be repetitive and kids are aware of this.......they dont make them like they used to ....

I find that these days a lot of kids films have gags for the adults in them, that just go over the kids heads. Plus they all seem to have happy endings.
When I was young, kids films were for kids, without having to have in-jokes for the adults. And most of the time, the adults loved them anyway. And they were sad too - Think about Bambi, Watership Down, ET, etc.
I agree Shrek is great, but apart from that, none of these modern films are a patch on any of those I watched as a child.

I agree about the older films. Don't forget Wizard of Oz, Labyrinth, Willy Wonka ( the original. The new one is lousy) plus nearly all the Disney films (except Fantasia)
I can still watch them now and enjoy them.
As you say only shrek, finding nemo and toy story have lived up to them.
When I have kids they are watching the only stuff whether they like it or not!

I like the old kid films best too, last thursday my daughter was caught watching Charlotte's Web in the living room when i came in from work. My daughter is 18 and loved it. she's seen Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, all 3 of the Neverending Story's and E.T. and Home Alone. Have you seen Ice Age and Ice Age 2- they are good children's films. we went to the drive-in to see Ice Age 2 back in July. I think parents need to let their children watch the movies we watched when we were little. My favorite as a child was Chitty Chitty Bang Bang and I hated Wizard of Oz. I still won't watch the Wizard of Oz, but its because it gave me nightmares when i seen it (i was 5) and i still can't bear to watch it. I seen E.T. when i was in highschool and i thought it was an excellent movie (i took my younger siblings to see it).

Hollywood is all about making money. They love predictability and the plots are very formula. The problem with movies today is that special effects are so easy to achieve. The Hollywood version of Flash and Awe, means you sacrifice plot and dialog for special effects. At least you can buy the DVDs of movies past for what you would spend taking your family to the theater.

Get some of the older ones. "Wizard of Oz", "Bambi", "Pinocchio", "Snow White", these you just cannot beat. Ask the video shop to help you find some of the older children's shows.
