could be the mother board, mine did the same thing a long time ago, but it also reset itself when it wanted :)
try a registry fixer (download.com) and run a virus scan (free also at download.com).

if its a problem with FAN or any hardware then the first time you arrive to Log-on Screen, next time your computer will hang before it, and next time before,... and so on
if this is what happens, then check your fans, you can do so by pressing DELETE when you start your computer, go to setup, then to Hardware Monitor, you can see the fan speeds
but I am sure this is not the cause of the problem, its caused virus, install any antivirus software, or you can do an online scan from
security.symantec.com/
if it didn't find viruses, then go to the following site
www.spybot.info
download spybot, install it, and let it check for spy's on your PC.
if this didn't help also, I am ready for further assistance

how old is the PC? have you cleaned it recently, with a vacuum cleaner... dust builds up on the motherboard, and clogs components... i know...when i first did mine the chip was chock full of dust..and it would shut down for no reason... it was of course overheating..
same wil happen if your power supply fan isnt working... good news is that a new 450watt power supply is less than 20 quid. (eclipsecomputers.com) mail order in coventry to anywhere in the world.
good luck

I could be over heating and shutting down to save the CPU from cooking.
Go in to the BIOS (press F9 or delete or whatever right to get in your BIOS) and check the CPU temperature and the shut down temp. Also you could look at the fan speed.

It might be a hardware issue .. like the fan ... ( check the pc temperature ) ... and it could be lots of startup programs ... try to go to .. and type < msconfig > .. from there go to the tab ... and uncheck what you don't want to startup each time you start your pc
