Is this because of the food or water they are drinking? Or just poor dental hygiene?

they probably don't have toothbrushes and probably the water also heck look at the Brittish they look like they have a mouth full of Captain Crunch they don't have flouride in their water supply so their teeth are jacked up too

Gee, funny you should ask this question. I'm married to an Indonesian who has excellent hygeniene, a good set of teeth, and who takes care of those teeth probably better then a lot of Americans.

i don't know with indonesians but when i had my vacation in hong kong, girls there are pretty with flawless skin but they have bad set of teeth. maybe because we just encountered those on the working class because having your teeth fixed like braces is luxury to some. i also know white people who have bad set of teeth. we cannot generalise them.

Many reasons for it - poor prenatal and post natal care etc, etc. However, one element or contributory factor not commonly known by "tourist" or non indonesians is the practice of chewing the beetle nut.
