they tell you not to because the caffeine can hurt the baby and give it birth defects

Yes, but in moderation. I would say no more than one cup a day. Also, watch your other caffeine intake. Alot of people forget about sodas and tea, they may not have as much caffeine as a cup of coffee, but caffeine is caffeine. Plus you already have to urinate enough, all coffee does is make you go even more. To know for sure though, just talk with your doctor. He might tell you to stay away from it all together. Believe me I understand, when I was pregnant there was nothing that could cool me off better on a hot day like a frappacino from Starbucks.

Yes. Pregnant women can safely drink coffee, as long as it's limited to about 2 cups a day.

There's a lot of anti-caffeine propeganda, but it's not backed-up by medical research.

(From the site below) "Three major studies involving more than 15,000 women found no birth defects associated with caffeine consumption even among the heaviest coffee drinkers. Similarly, other human studies continue to support the conclusion that moderate consumption of caffeine does not predispose expectant mothers to spontaneous abortion or preterm delivery, nor the fetus to low birth weight."

I was told 1-2 cups of caffeinated beverage daily is completely fine. I usually have 2 cups in the morning & if I want to keep drinking coffee (I work in a diner - hard to stay away from) I switch to decaf.

Yes.

During my pregnancy, my OBGYN advised me not to take too much though. No more than 3 regular sized cups should be the limit. Too much caffeine will increase the already fast heartbeat of your foetus to even faster.

She can, but shouldn't. It's a tetarogen to the baby. It's suggested that a pregnant woman cut off all caffeeine and artificial sweetners. But hey, if she's craving it, I say let her have a little every now and then.

Not at all recommended. Try substituting with Tea. Tea is not as bad as coffee, as it comes with lot of anti-oxidants.

One cup a day just like one glass of wine or beer a day. Check with your obstetrician
