I was wondering if anyone knows where in India Aish's family is originally from? I know it says she was born and raised in the South but she clearly resembles a North Indian. I believe Rai is a Punjabi last name? Does anyone know where her ancestry is from?

Yeah I am kinda shocked she is south indian, after travelling india i feel like she represents a north indian. i mean aishwarya rai's features (fair skin, light eyes) are nothing out of the ordinary in punjab, kashmir. those areas. i would never take her for a south indian. thanks guys

I guess what my real question or statement was... is the fact that you can be born anywhere, i was born in canada that does not make me a native canadian because my ancestry in punjabi. so aish could have been born anywhere in india, i was just curious where her ancestors come from. i have never seen a south indian with her features. in all of my travels. ;)

WOW, people are sensitve, it clearly shows the insecurity southern people may have about their skintones and features. Ofcourse its not out of the ordinary for someone of the south to have light skin, I mean we can see African Americans coming from both parents who are dark be born with blue eyes and light skin. However, when it comes down to it, they usually have some kind of white or other ancestry that gives them this look. Looks such as Aishwarya's are very rare because I have travelled the south and done many studies. South Indians are a Dravidian Race whereas Northern people are Aryan, which usually have the features of someone like Aish. By the way, who the hell said South Indians were ugly!

Aishwarya Rai was born in Mangalore, in the South Indian state of Karnataka, to Krishnaraj Rai, a marine engineer, and Vrinda Rai, a writer. Her ancestors are from the Bunt community of Mangalore.[3] Her family later relocated to Mumbai. Rai has one brother, Aditya Rai, who is three years older than she is. Aditya is a film producer, and has occasionally produced films in which Rai acted. Aditya got married in early 2004.
Rai's native language is Tulu; she also speaks Hindi, English, Urdu, Kannada, Marathi, and Tamil.
Rai attended the Arya Vidya Mandir at Santacruz, Mumbai, then entered Ruparel College, Matunga, Mumbai. She was an A student and was on track to become an architect.
Rai began modeling on the side while studying architecture. In the 1994 Miss India contest, she placed second behind Sushmita Sen, and went on to win the Miss World title that same year and the Miss Photogenic award. After the one year reign as Miss World in London, she then worked as a professional model, in advertising and Indian fashion magazines.

I just have something to say here....after reading several comments here. Why is it impossible for a south indian to have fair skin and good looks? Why is it difficult to believe that a beautiful person like Aishwarya is actually a South Indian? In Bollywood many of the top leading ladies were south indians, for example Hema Malini, Rekha, Sri Devi and now Shilpa Shetty, Vidya Balan and Aish too and the list goes on. Yes, Aish is from Karnataka....is it hard to believe????, and I think it is not nice to differentiate people like this. I feel really proud that we have these beautiful people representing the South Indians and this proves that in overall, India has beauties in EVERY CORNER of the country!!!!!!

She is from South India indeed and many South Indians are as beautiful as she is and certainly not mixed with Aryan or etc... South Indians of non aboriginal or native origin have Caucasian features...They may not be fair as North Indians but nevertheless they still have Caucasian features and not mixed with Aryans...Only the natives who were the original settlers of India and mostly concentrated in the South have different features and are of Australoid stock...
