Oh dear. Please do not self-medicate. There is a potential problem when you do that. Let's consider an hypothesis. You have a problem with sleeping, so, without having a blood pressure check or any other form of check, you dose yourself with a medication which, in certain circumstances could be lethal. The medication over the counter may be fine for a person in reasonable condition, but what happens if there is a latent cause for the lack of sleep. Play it carefully. Please don't play with medicines. Incidentally, over the counter pills can be addictive too.

You GP won't automatically prescribe you pills. So don't stress about going and see him.
You need to get to the root of why you can't sleep. Are you stressed? For example.
Try some vigorous exercise during the evening. Lay off the coffee and anything with caffeine in it. Don't eat a heavy meal after 7pm.
Have a soak in the bath before going to bed. Not being funny, but sex is good for inducing sleep soon there after.
If I find that you can't sleep, I tend to get up and watch TV for a while - otherwise I just stress over it. Then I go back to bed after an hour or so.
You can also go to your pharmacist - there're bound to be some good herbal remedies out there. You could also try some alternative medicine; but, in order I would try;
Exercise, bath, no coffee and no stressful TV watching and sex
Pharmacist
Alternative medicine
GP
Don't do them all at once, or you'll never know what's worked and what hasn't.

Be sure your routine is conducive to a good night's sleep. Don't exercise close to bedtime, don't eat right before you go to bed, spend some time doing something low key and relaxing. Read, watch TV. take a relaxing bath, meditate, whatever you can to slow your mind from the hectic day schedule.
Make your room dark. If you watch TV to go to sleep, set it to shut off so it doesn't interrupt your sleep later. If you listen to music, try a CD rather than radio so the change from music to talking doesn't interfere with your sleep.
A good over the counter remedy that my Dr. recommended was Melatonin. I sleep sonner, sounder, and don't wake up feeling like I've been drugged as I did with Nytol and some prescrition medications.

When my daughter was having trouble sleeping, she started taking pro plus during the day as it was tiring her out. When she stopped taking them after a week, she slept like a baby because she didn't have that extra stimulation. However, you do need to get to the root cause of what is causing your sleepless nights. Missing school during half term was enough to keep my girl awake so it really doesn't take much. Have a think about the slightest thing that may be worrying you, no matter how trivial you think it is & get it sorted out.

For short term use only, I would recommend Nytol. Get the 2 a night ones and try one a night at first to see if that helps. If not, increase to 2 a night.
WARNING!: Do not use these tablets for long term problems, if you are a serious insomniac it's important to go to your GP for advice. You could also try meditation or yoga, which are both great for relaxation. As an insomniac myself, I wish you luck!

I find that if I have something important to do the next day and have to get up early then I am practically guaranteed not to be able to get to sleep. The more anxious I get about it, the less I am likely to get off.
I've learnt not to worry about it now. If I can't sleep I get up and make myself a chamomile tea, take myself off to the spare room so I don't disturb my husband and read until my brain stops fighting with me! Also - I don't have any drinks with caffeine in them after 6pm.
